What is an AI readiness score?

Short answer

An AI readiness score rates how cleanly an assistant can extract a correct answer from a page, usually on a scale of zero to one hundred. The score reflects structure rather than writing quality: whether questions are marked as headings, whether answers stand alone, and whether the markup states what the page is.

What does the score actually measure?

Extractability. A model reading a page has to decide which passage answers a question, and a page that makes that decision easy scores well.

That is a structural property, not an editorial one. Beautifully written prose with no headings and no self-contained answers scores badly, and a plainly written page with clear question headings scores well.

What tends to cost the most points?

The same handful of things, on most sites.

  • Answers that depend on the paragraph above them to make sense.
  • Headings written as labels rather than questions.
  • No structured markup stating what the page is or what it answers.
  • No visible last-updated date, so currency cannot be judged.
  • Key content rendered only by JavaScript, so a crawler sees an empty page.

Is a high score the same as being cited?

No, and treating them as the same thing leads to disappointment. A high score means a page can be quoted cleanly. Whether it actually is depends on whether the model retrieves it at all, which is a market question rather than a page one.

Readiness is necessary and not sufficient. A perfectly structured page nobody links to will still not be quoted.

How often should a page be re-scored?

After any substantial edit, and otherwise a few times a year. The score changes when the page changes, so continuous monitoring mostly measures nothing.

The exception is a site with templated pages. Fixing the template moves every page at once, which makes a re-score immediately after a template change worthwhile.

Frequently asked questions

Is an AI readiness score an official metric?
No. There is no standard published by any model provider. Different tools score differently, so a score is useful as a relative measure over time rather than as an absolute rating.
Does a good score help with normal search too?
Usually, yes. Clear headings, self-contained answers and correct structured data are longstanding technical SEO practice, so the work overlaps substantially.
How does NexPulse score a page?
AEO Audit crawls a live URL and returns an AI readiness score out of 100 with the top three fixes for that specific page.
